If you are in business and wish to start taking credit cards you will in most cases require a Merchant Account (you will require one for all of our card processing software and hardware solutions). A Merchant account is an account (different from your Current account) that you have with one of the UK's acquiring banks that enables you to process credit and debit card payments. With the introduction of chip and pin you are still able to use all your existing magnetic swipe only cards and chip cards that are not PIN enabled. In the not too distant future all these legacy cards wil be replaced by the banks with chip and pin cards. If you tender a chip and pin card you will be asked to enter the PIN - if you can't remember the PIN then the retailer may allow you to still pay for the goods with your card and signature verification but they do not have to accept payment if you cannot enter your PIN.
